The United States of America is assisting the people of Fiji by responding to the recently declared state of emergency in the western parts of the main island, Viti Levu, caused by the severe flooding of homes, towns and villages.

The Embassy of the United States in Suva, Fiji, has donated USD 50,000 to the Fiji Red Cross for the provision of non-food emergency relief supplies – including blankets, water purification tablets and hygiene kits – to the areas and people affected by the devastating floods.

The United States commends the government’s response to the floods and remains committed to helping the people of Fiji with disaster relief efforts.

Through its Center for Excellence in Disaster Management and Humanitarian Assistance, the United States has provided significant training and support to relevant agencies in Fiji in 2010 and 2011, assisting them in their efforts to better respond to disasters.
