Australian Government humanitarian supplies have been delivered to some of the Fijian communities that bore the brunt of Tropical Cyclone Winston as Australia continues to roll out its initial $5 million humanitarian assistance package.
“As we gain a clearer understanding of the scale of devastation to homes and infrastructure, our thoughts and prayers go out to the people of Fiji and communities of Fijian heritage in Australia that are concerned about family and friends,” Minister Fierravanti-Wells said.
Prepositioned supplies for up to 33,000 people have been distributed by Australia’s partner organisations on the ground. The Australian Defence Force has transported additional stores for over 20,000 people, including emergency shelter kits, water purification tablets and basic personal hygiene items.
“Australia’s six-person medical team is in Rakiraki town on the northern coast of Vitu Levu island. They will provide essential medical care to residents of this town, which took the full force of the Cyclone.”
Meanwhile Australian Defence Force helicopters are flying to remote islands to assess the full impact of the Cyclone and provide relief assistance.
“Australia will continue to work closely with the Government of Fiji over the coming days and weeks to ensure that our support continues to reach those most impacted by the disaster.”
