Prime Minister Rabuka commissions new facilities at Lekutu district and secondary schools

A new chapter was opened this morning (25/7/24) for the educational journey of the students and communities of Bua province when Prime Minister Hon. Sitiveni Rabuka officially commissioned new facilities at the Lekutu District School and Lekutu Secondary School.

The Prime Minister extended heartfelt appreciation to the Australian Government, represented by High Commissioner Mr. Ewan Macdonald, for their unwavering support and partnership.” He acknowledged the substantial contribution of approximately FJD 11.3 million towards constructing the new school facilities, which are a part of Australia's Tropical Cyclone Yasa and Ana recovery program.

“Since its inception in 1978, Lekutu Secondary School has played a crucial role in providing quality education to Tikina Lekutu and Navakasiga students, including villages and maritime communities,” said the Prime Minister.

The construction of the new facilities began in July 2021 and was completed this month.
“The resilience and dedication of the school management at Lekutu District School and Secondary School are commendable. Their efforts, in partnership with donors, highlight the value placed on education for the children of Lekutu.”

“Today, we celebrate the opening of these new infrastructures that will enhance the learning environment for your children.”

"This project, the Prime Minister said, will benefit 218 students and 20 teachers at Lekutu Secondary and 179 students and eight teachers at Lekutu District School, providing modern and conducive environments for teaching and learning."

Prime Minister Rabuka praised the dedication and hard work of all involved, including the donors and Pacific Building Solutions, the contractor responsible for the project.

“Education remains a top priority for the Fijian government. The Coalition Government is committed to investing in the education sector through initiatives like the free education grant, transport assistance for low-income families, and a substantial back-to-school support fund.”

Prime Minister Rabuka further urged the community to take ownership of the new buildings and classrooms, viewing them as gifts from the Australian people and government. He emphasised the importance of holistic education and inclusive policies to ensure no student is left behind.

The Australian High Commissioner, His Excellency Ewan Macdonald, stated in his address that the new school buildings and boarding facilities for students from surrounding islands are vital for providing education and opportunity.

“For those from remote villages, three and a half years without boarding houses is a long time, and I commend you for your perseverance and patience.”

“Our dedicated team of contractors has worked diligently to rebuild what was lost during Tropical Cyclone Yasa, using locally sourced materials and labor. This approach is important to Australia, as it supports the principle of building back better with local resources and talent, something you can be rightfully proud of,” stated the High Commissioner.

“I often speak about the renewed and elevated Vuvale partnership, a family agreement between us built on mutual trust, respect, and a commitment to a peaceful and prosperous region. This partnership is about action. We are collaborating to improve the lives of Fijians in healthcare, education, equality, and social inclusion.”

The High Commissioner adds, “This month, we will mark the completion of all nine schools under the $57 million Fijian Cyclone Recovery Program. These schools are built to withstand a Category 5 cyclone, ensuring a safe and quality education for the future. Australia recognizes the immense benefit of investing in quality education to secure a brighter future.”
