The purpose of this report is to provide the update on the current operations undertaken after TC Winston.

This Situation Report is issued by the National Emergency Operation Centre and covers the period from 1600hrs - 2400 hours, 08/03/2016. Updates in this report summarise all reports and briefs submitted from various EOC’s in the four divisions.

1.0 NATIONAL HIGHLIGHTS

a) PM praises rehabilitation efforts on Koro - Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama has commended the relief and rehabilitation work being undertaken by the Australian Defence Force on the island of Koro.

b) PM visits Ucunivanua - The Hon. Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama visited the community of Ucunivanua in Verata, Tailevu this week to look at damages to infrastructure in the village.

c) More donations towards Prime Minister’s national disaster relief fund - The business sector continues to contribute towards efforts by the Fijian Government to rehabilitate areas affected by Tropical Cyclone Winston.

d) Government announces waiver of municipal market vendors fees - Government has announced the waiver of market vendor fees to lessen the burden faced by farmers in the aftermath of TC Winston.

e) 99 percent schools to be open by Monday - The Ministry of Education is hoping to have all schools operational by next Monday says Education Minister Hon. Dr Mahendra Reddy.

f) UNICEF assists in schools opening - Minister for Education Hon. Dr Mahendra Reddy yesterday received $423, 000 worth of assistance from the United Nations Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) to assist in government’s efforts in ensuring that students around the country return to normalcy.

g) Samoa donates $100,000 to fiji - The Fijian Government today received $100,000 Fijian Dollars from the Government of the Independent State of Samoa to assist the Fijian Government with relief and recovery efforts in the wake of severe Tropical Cyclone Winston.

h) Relief items received from Methodist church - The Commissioner Eastern Division, Luke Moroivalu today received relief items from the Methodist Church in Fiji to help with relief efforts in the wake of the devastation caused by severe Tropical Cyclone Winston.

i) Tourism minister commends Tanoa group for contribution to tourism growth - The Minister for Tourism Hon. Faiyaz Siddiq Koya today commended the efforts of the Tanoa Group for their contribution towards growing Fiji’s tourism sector.
