On Friday January 27, the Government of Japan decided to provide emergency relief goods worth 18 million yen (approximately 234 thousand USD) (tent, plastic sheet, portable jerry can) to the Republic of Fiji, through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) in response to the request following serious damage from the floods.

In Fiji, heavy rain caused the floods from January 24. On January 25, the Government of Fiji announced the Declaration of a State of Natural Disaster for parts of the Western Division for next 15 days. The Government of Fiji reported, as of January 27, six people were dead and approximately 4,600 people were evacuated to the shelter. Although the rain has been ceased from January 25, the Western Division is still flooded.

In response to the request from the Government of Fiji, the Government of Japan has decided to provide emergency assistance from a humanitarian point of view for the victims as well as in light of friendly relations between Japan and Fiji. (END)
