Italy makes a contribution to the populations of the Fiji Islands

Following the passing of tropical cyclone “Winston” – which swept over the Fiji Archipelago last weekend – Italian Cooperation, in coordination with the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation, will allocate to the Fiji Red Cross Society – through the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) – a contribution of 100,000 Euros for the purpose of supporting the efforts made by local authorities to tackle the consequences of the cyclone-induced emergency.

Italy’s contribution will support the distribution of food and relief supplies in the most hard-hit islands (Viti Levu and Vanua Levu).

The cyclone caused the death of at least 20 people and destroyed hundreds of homes. The Government of Fiji has declared a state of disaster and has assigned to the Fiji Red Cross Society the task of coordinating rescue operations and of performing a preliminary assessment of damages.
