Health authorities emphasise hygiene

People currently taking refuge at the various evacuation centres will have medical teams on stand by for any illnesses and dieases

The Health Ministry says their primary focus at the moment is water, sanitation and nutritional issues of people living at evacuation centres.

The Ministry’s Deputy Secretary for Public Health, Dr Joe Koroivueta said a set of 3 teams have been deployed to Nadroga, Navosa, Nadi, Lautoka , Ba, Tavua and Rakiraki who are geared with supplies and vehicles.

"Team one is looking at the health of the people at the evacuation centres and also vector control and vector surveillance. The second team looks at food contamination and food inspection. They also look at shops, water, sanitation and hygiene while the third team looks at surveillance for communicable diseases such as typhoid, leptopirosis and diarrhea," Dr Koroivueta said.

Health staffs have been mobilised from the North and Suva to ensure there is no disrupt of services and that services at health facilities continue.

"We know that its going to be a long overhaul as we go through but this is part of Government's response and we want to ensure that the risks are taken care of and we respond to the needs."
