Fiji: Situation Update as of 26 February 2016

Situation Overview

  • Category 5 Tropical Cyclone Winston hit Fiji on 20 and 21 February with sustained winds of around 230 kmph. Reports indicate 42 people have been killed. The current count of evacuees totals 62,461 and Fiji Government now estimates approximately 350,000 people may have been affected.

  • The Fiji National Disaster Management Office (NDMO) is leading the response to the emergency, coordinating efforts and the National Emergency Operations Centre (NEOC) has been activated.

  • Although not formally activated for this response, the Logistics Cluster, through the lead agency WFP, is supporting relief efforts through logistics coordination and information management,on behalf of the government and humanitarian partners.

  • The Fiji National Cluster System is fully activated, meeting and working with partners and the NDMO to deliver relief items to affected areas. The Logistics Cluster is workingwith Fiji National ClusterSystemlead to offer assistanceand to help identifylogisticsgaps.
