Following the passage of Tropical Cyclone Urmil on 28 February – 1 March, which moved south of Fiji, heavy rain and consequent flooding have impacted the country, causing damage and disruptions.
Media reports indicate that some people have been evacuated, particularly from the Ba Highlands in northern‑central Fiji, and that nearly 100 roads are closed or restricted because of flooding or washouts, most of them in the Western Division. Electricity supplies were disrupted in parts of Viti Levu, and many raw‑water sources and treatment facilities have been affected.
For the next 48 hours, more heavy rain and thunderstorms are expected across most of the country. Flash‑flood warnings are in effect for Viti Levu, and heavy‑rain warnings have been issued for most of Fiji on 3 March.
