FIJI ISLANDS - CYCLONE RAJAH
INFORMATION REPORT NO. 1
30 DECEMBER 1986

1. UNDRO/UNDP RESIDENT REPRESENTATIVE REPORTS CYCLONE RAJAH HIT NORTH VANUA LEVU ON 29/30 DEC, MOVING THROUGH LAU GROUP TOWARD TONGA.

2. NO OFFICIAL ASSESSMENT AVAILABLE BUT CONSIDERABLE DAMAGE TO CROPS, ROADS, BRIDGES, WATER/POWER SUPPLY SYSTEM REPORTED IN VANUA LEVU, TAVEUNI AND NEARBY ISLANDS. FURTHER DESTRUCTION CAUSED BY TIDAL WAVES AND LANDSLIDES EXPECTED IN LAU GROUP AND LOW-LYING AREAS.

3. GOVT HAS SO FAR NOT CONVEYED TO UNDRO APPEAL FOR INTERNATIONAL ASSISTANCE.

SITUATION

1. AREAS MOST AFFECTED ARE EAST VANUA LEVU, TAVEUNI AND LAU GROUPS. ACCORDING LATEST INFO RECEIVED FROM AODRO, RAJAH STILL TRACKING SSE WITH WINDSPEED AT CENTRE 75 KNOTS (ABOUT 140 KM/H). CYCLONE HAS GAINED SPEED WHICH NOW 12 KNOTS (22 KM/H). SOUTH OF TONGA LOCATION FORECAST FOR MORNING 1 JAN.

2. ONE PERSON MISSING AT SEA, ONE HURT. ABOUT 260,000 PERSONS IN AFFECTED AREAS.

3. FORTY-ONE EMERGENCY CENTRES WITH FOOD DISTRIBUTION OPENED FOR OVER 3,000 EVACUEES.

4. PRELIMINARY DAMAGE ASSESSMENT FOR EAST VANUA LEVU AND TAVEUNI ON ON POST AND TELECOMMUNICATIONS INSTALLATIONS, WATER SUPPLIES, SCHOOLS BUIDINGS, ROADS, SEAWALL, JETTIES, AIRPORT, HOUSES, CROPS AN LIVESTOCK TOTALS FIJI DLRS 6 MILLION (APPROX US DLRS 1.1 MILLION).

5. EMERGENCY SUPPLIES AND EQUIPMENT, AVAILABLE IN VITILEVU, MUST BE TRANSPORTED FOR DISTRIBUTION IN AFFECTED AREAS.

REQUIREMENTS

6. FUNDS FOR FOOD RATIONS, TRANSPORT AND DISTRIBUTION, CLEARANCE OF DEBRIS, LABOUR, FUEL, ETC.

INTERNATIONAL RESPONSE

7. ALTHOUGH GOVT HAS NOT REQUESTED INTERNATIONAL HELP, SEVERAL MAJOR DONORS HAVE ALREADY PLEDGED ASSISTANCE.

SITUATION

1. RAJAH, ONE OF WORST CYCLONES EVER TO HIT FIJI GROUP, HAS CAUSED EXTENSIVE DAMAGE TO CROPS, ROADS, BRIDGES, WATER/POWER AND TELECOMMUNICATIONS.

2. GOVT REVIEWING FINANCIAL IMPLICATIONS BEFORE STARTING REHABILITATION PHASE. TOTAL ESTIMATED DAMAGE PRESENTLY FIJI DLRS 16 MILLION (OVER US DLRS 14 MILLION) OF WHICH MORE THAN HALF CONCERNS AGRICULTURE (MAINLY CROPS AND LIVESTOCK). FIGURE DOES NOT INCLUDE DAMAGE TO HOUSES, WATER SUPPLY, LIVESTOCK IN LAU AND OPERATIONAL EXPENSES FOR EMERGENCY PHASE.

REQUIREMENTS

3. UNITED NATIONS AND EEC APPROACHED BY GOVERNMENT TO PROVIDE US DLRS 140,000 FOR EMERGENCY FOOD. OTHER DONORS (GOVTS, NGO'S, PRIVATE) ASSISTING IN INFRASTRUCTURE AND AGRICULTURE.

4. DETAILED LIST OF REQUIREMENTS WILL BE PROVIDED AS SOON AS RECEIVED.
