Fiji: Agriculture funds relief efforts

The Ministry of Agriculture Sugar, and Land Resettlement has re-allocated $1267,200 dollars from within its 2003 budget provision to help with alleviation efforts.

Assistant Minister for Agriculture, Sugar and Land Resettlement Isireli Tuvuki announced this in Parliament yesterday.

"The Ministry will continue to do its best within the limited resources it has to facilitate the work to those in need so they would quickly recover and get on with their normal lives and activities which they enjoyed prior to the devastation caused by tropical Cyclone Ami," he said.

The funds are earmarked for crop rehabilitation, infrastructure, drainage, animal health and production, and research.

Rehabilitation work carried out by the ministry on February 17th amounted to a total of 1072kg of vegetable seeds worth $21,918 and fencing equipment worth $24,092.

These have been distributed to 9131 farmers in the provinces of Macuata, Cakaudrove, Lomaiviti and Lau.
