Asia and the Pacific: Weekly Regional Humanitarian Snapshot (18 - 24 February 2025)

FIJI

Tropical Cyclone Rae formed over the South Pacific Ocean north of Fiji on the 21 February. Despite the weather system not making landfall, heavy rainfall, strong winds, and storm surges are forecast across the country over the next 36 hours. At the time of reporting, more than 1,500 displaced people are preventatively sheltering in 58 evacuation centres across the northern, eastern, and central divisions. Meanwhile, Category 1 Cyclone Seru, currently located east of Vanuatu, is expected to also move southeast and is anticipated to remain far west of Fiji. According to forecasts by the Fiji Meteorological Service, strong winds and heavy rains are expected to affect the country from 27 February to 2 March.

MYANMAR

The escalation of conflict between the Myanmar Armed Forces and non-state armed groups in northeastern and southeastern Myanmar has caused significant displacement over the past week. In Kayin State, more than 5,000 people have been displaced since 15 February due to intensified clashes in Hpapun Township. Nearly 2,200 have sought refuge in Hpa-An Township, while others remain in hiding. In southern Shan, fighting since 16 February has forced more than 2,000 people to flee to safer areas. In Kachin State, clashes in Hpakant Township have newly displaced approximately 1,500 people since 17 February. The displaced people are in urgent need of food, shelter, and emergency assistance
