Operational Updates Relief Support
- WFP provided food assistance to 1.7 million people food-insecure individuals in Afar, Amhara, Tigray and Somali regions – distributing 19,800 metric tons (MT) of in-kind food and USD 973,000 in cash assistance.
- Starting in July, due to funding shortfalls, WFP was compelled to reduce the cereal rations by 20 percent in districts facing emergency levels of food insecurity and in Internally Displaced People (IDP) camps. Full rations were maintained in districts with catastrophic levels of food insecurity.
- Following landslides in Gofa, WFP supported the local government’s response by installing four mobile storage units and dispatching nutrition assistance to support around 1,800 children under 5 and pregnant and breastfeeding women.
Support to Refugees
- WFP assisted 787,000 refugees in 29 camps and sites distributing 8,400 MT of in-kind food and USD 374,000 cash assistance. Due to funding shortfalls, WFP is providing reduced food rations at 60 percent of the standard monthly entitlement.
- WFP distributed 540 MT of nutritious supplementary food to 97,000 refugees to treat and prevent
- Moderate Acute Malnutrition (MAM) – including children under 5, and pregnant and breastfeeding women.
Livelihood Support and Climate Risk Management
- In 2024 so far, WFP has reached 500,000 individuals through resilience building of smallholder farmers and climate risk management initiatives (R4) in Afar, Amhara, Gambella, Somali and Tigray regions.
- In July, WFP supported smallholder farmers in preparing 212 hectares of land to boost crop cultivation. WFP also distributed 33 MT of seeds and 488,000 seedlings – including vegetables and maize.
School Meals
- In July, WFP organized take-home ration distributions following the end of the school year to ensure that any stock balance was distributed to school children – with 570 MT distributed to 168,000 children.
Nutrition Activities
- WFP supported 714,000 individuals with nutrition support for the treatment and prevention of acute malnutrition, including children under 5 years, pregnant and breastfeeding women. Among them, 570,000 received treatment for malnutrition, while 144,000 were targeted for malnutrition prevention. WFP distributed 3,900 MT of specialized nutritious food across eight regions.
- In Amhara, WFP provided fresh food vouchers (FFV) worth USD 82,000 to 7,000 individuals.
Accountability to Affected Populations
- WFP continues to strengthen its community feedback mechanisms (CFM). The number of feedback or complaints received increased by 100 percent in the first half of 2024 (31,479), compared to the second half of 2023 (15,750) - demonstrating improved CFM systems.
