Operations

The Integrated Demining Capacity (IDC) teams of the MACC deployed to the Badme area in Sector West and Tserona area in Sector Centre. The Route Clearance team continued operations in Sector West, within the Temporary Security Zone. The team conducted road clearance operations and cleared an area of 102,059 sq.m. and 26 kms of road in the area during the week. The Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Team of the MACC based in Ethiopia deployed to Atagna and Togoza areas and conducted mine disposal operations and destroyed two AP mines. The EOD team of the MACC operating in Eritrea made predeployment preparation for operations in the following week.

The Quality Assurance (QA) team deployed to Sector Centre, Senafe and Mai Mine area to conduct operations. The team visited and conducted investigation of (Unexploded Ordnance) UXO incidents report. The Medical Coordinator of the MACC conducted Pre Hospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS) training which covered the CPR-Examination, Life threatening situation, Basic first aid training, primary survey, trauma management ,spinal control, breathing, circulation, level of conscious, exposure, oxygen therapy and suction technique courses.

The FMALO conducted meetings with authorities concerning permission for the MACC EOD team to dispose AP mines found in Atagna and Togosa villages located in AdiGirat. The Liaison officer liased with communities to obtain new information. The FMALO conducted discussed with authorities located in Entechio,seeking permission for demining a helipad close to Kelelly. During the meeting, the commander supported the efforts of UNMEE MACC involved in humanitarian demining activity, and understood necessity of checking the helipad.

The Kenyan Demining Coy has arrived in the mission area and will be deployed to its area of operations in the near future.

Mine Risk Education

One MACC Mine Risk Education (MRE) Team deployed to Sector Centre, Sub zone of Tsorena area conducted MRE briefings in Dibi village. Eighty-three local people from different age groups and gender received MRE awareness. The team also reported a mine incident on 24 September 2006 in Dibi, Sub zone of Tserona. The MRE cell in Asmara conducted MRE training to 7 UNMEE MACC staff members.
