Highlights

  • Despite significant progress, 2024 was characterized by severe climatic shocks, disease outbreaks, and internal conflict that impacted children and their families.
  • From January to December 2024, over 10 million malaria cases including 1,342 deaths were reported from Oromia (42%), Amhara (20%), Southwest (9.6%), South Ethiopia (9.5%) and Benishangul Gumuz (5%) regions. Additionally, a total of 27,076 cholera cases and 269 deaths (CFR= 0.99%) were reported from 235 affected woredas.
  • Since January, UNICEF provided treatment to nearly 666,000 acutely malnourished children under five years of age across the country. UNICEF also provided access to safe drinking water for over 2.9 million people through rehabilitation of existing non-functional water schemes. UNICEF supported over 667,000 people through child protection interventions including mental health and psychosocial support (MHPSS), family tracing and reunification and alternative care services for unaccompanied and separated children and prevention and response to violence, including gender-based violence (GBV).
  • Throughout the year, UNICEF reached more than 3.8 million children and women with primary healthcare services and medical consultations.
  • By the end of 2024, UNICEF had received only 24 per cent of the required funding against the 2024 HAC humanitarian appeal. UNICEF Ethiopia’s 2025 Humanitarian Action for Children requires US$493M to address the multiple, and increasing challenges being faced by highly vulnerable populations to help avert further disastrous consequences of overlapping crises.
