Somalia Flood Watch - Issued: 14 June 2005

There has been minimal rainfall in the Ethiopian catchments and in Somalia over the past weeks. Reports from Somalia suggest the Gu Season has ended and that Hagaar Season conditions have become established. The river levels have fallen dramatically over the past week on both the Shabelle, and have continued to drop on the Juba. It would appear that there is no further risk of flooding on either river. This will be last the Flood Watch issued until the beginning of the Deyr.

Shabelle

River levels have fallen dramatically at Belet Weyne over the past week as the over-land flow has receded and normal channel flow conditions have been re-established. Flows are now within the range of the river gauge. A similar, though less dramatic trend has been reported from Bulo Burti.

Juba

The levels at Luuq and Bardheere have continued their downward trend over the past week. As expected the rate of this decrease has slowed and conditions have normalised.
