BACKGROUND
On 4 November 2020, military confrontations between federal and regional forces in the Tigray Region led the Government to declare a State of Emergency. Since then, the Region has continued to be affected by armed clashes and insecurity. This has had a serious impact on access and the provision of humanitarian assistance to refugees and other persons of concern.
Due to the conflict, UN and humanitarian partners were forced to relocate most of their staff from Shire in northern Tigray Region. Only a limited number of critical staff remain in the areas affected by the conflict. With limited access to cash, fuel and food, their operational capacity has been severely hindered. This has led to a drastic halt in the delivery of all services to Eritrean refugees.
A joint team of WFP, UNHCR and Ethiopia’s Agency for Refugee and Returnee Affairs (ARRA) conducted a distribution in Adi-Harush and Mai Aini refugee camps of food rations for a month to 25,191 refugees between 17 -23 December. Food security in the camps nevertheless remains a critical concern, and this is compounded by a cessions of protection services and lack of access to fuel and other essential supplies.
