  • Around 4,000 asylum seekers and refugee population are currently physically present in Maratane Refugee Center, while 1,000 individuals from the two countries (Ethiopia and Somalia) are at the entry point in Palma and in need of humanitarian assistance.

  • The poor health conditions in which the asylum-seekers arrive to Mozambique after a long sea and road journey already provoked a wave of diarrhoea and dysentery causing 33 deaths in Maratane Refugee Center.

  • Three groups of Somalis and Ethiopians (about 50 individuals) were deported to Tanzania by the local police commander in Palma.

  • Four Somali asylum seekers were reportedly killed by border police on the night of 29 April 2011. This sad incident is being investigated.
