Around 4,000 asylum seekers and refugee population are currently physically present in Maratane Refugee Center, while 1,000 individuals from the two countries (Ethiopia and Somalia) are at the entry point in Palma and in need of humanitarian assistance.

Four Somali asylum seekers were reportedly killed by border police on the night of 29 April 2011. This sad incident is being investigated.
