Islamic Relief is preparing to support communities in Ethiopia following intense seismic activity that has forced the evacuation of tens of thousands of people.
Around 50 earthquakes, ranging from 4.2-magnitude to 5.8-magnitude, have struck the regions of southern Afar and northern Oromia close to the Fentale and Dofan volcanoes in central Ethiopia.
The earthquakes have caused widespread damage to important infrastructure including health centres, schools and roads. They have also damaged thousands of homes, resulting in the evacuation of more than 60,000 people who are now residing in emergency shelters.
Ethiopia’s government has launched an immediate response, with support from United Nations agencies and other international non-governmental organisations operating in the region. Ethiopia’s Disaster Risk Management Commission has already sent 16 trucks of food supplies to displacement sites, but more assistance is needed.
Islamic Relief has a presence the affected regions and is now preparing to launch an emergency response. We are coordinating with the government and other local organisations to ensure we can respond quickly.
Our response will look to provide cash assistance and food for the affected communities. We will also look to provide water and hygiene and sanitation products.
Please help Islamic Relief respond to emergencies in Ethiopia and elsewhere. Donate to our Global Emergencies Fund now.
