EU Desirous to Support Ethiopia in Fighting Human Trafficking: European Commission Official

Addis Ababa December 11/2018 The European Union wants to support Ethiopia in preventing illegal migration, European Commission Migration and Home Affairs Deputy Director-General Simon Mordue said.

Simon Mordue and Foreign Affairs State Minister Markos Tekle had meeting on the margins of the Intergovernmental Conference to adopt the Global Compact of Migration in Marakesh, Morroco, according to a press statement of Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Mordue said on the occasion EU wants to collaborate with Ethiopia on the return and reintegration as well as fight against human trafficking.

The Deputy Director-General stated that EU also plans to pilot circulation migration where citizens from origin countries will be allowed to European countries and return home after working for a defined period of time.

Foreign Affairs State Minister Markos Tekle on his part underlined that focus is made on creating economic opportunities at home to prevent the youth from falling prey to traffickers.

The Government of Ethiopia is exerting efforts to create jobs through labor intensive light manufacturing by building industrial zones in different parts of the country, he added.

In light of this, Markos urged EU to further intensify its support to Ethiopia in job creation, return as well as reintegration of returnees.

Expressing appreciation to the EU for the progress made with the Jobs Compact, the state minister also affirmed Ethiopia’s readiness to further build on the achievements made so far.
