Ethiopia: UNHCR Operational Update, October 2024

Attachments

This month, UNHCR called for the need to protect Eritrean asylum seekers in Ethiopia. In a press release shared in November, we warned of the steady influx of asylum seekers from Eritrea arriving in Ethiopia through the northern regions of Afar and Tigray, seeking international protection and basic assistance. We believe supporting newly arriving Eritrean refugees at an early stage is crucial to advancing their protection. UNHCR is ready to immediately support the Government to expand access to registration for Eritrean asylum-seekers in Ethiopia. For internally displaced persons, UNHCR joined forces with the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) to warn that internal displacement, driven by conflict and climate shocks, is reversing decades of poverty reduction in Ethiopia, and to say humanitarian aid is not enough.
