Ethiopia Situation Report for period Jul 1999

Consolidated UN report prepared by the Information Section of the UN Emergencies Unit for Ethiopia from information and reports provided by specialised UN agencies, media sources, the Ethiopian Government and NGOs.

The UN Country Team has issued a Relief Action Plan and Appeal for non-food assistance to people in the most severely drought affected areas of Ethiopia, with proposed inputs in water and sanitation, nutrition, health and immunisation, and agricultural support amounting to a total of US $7.5 million;

Following efforts by the Government of Ethiopia and the UN to publicise the drought emergency in the country, the response from the donor community has much improved with cereal pledges totalling 369,205 MT now confirmed - 95 percent of the 386,586 MT drought relief requirement for the second half of the year;

Though food distributions to the war displaced in Tigray and Afar are currently proceeding smoothly, WFP warn of serious disruptions in the next two months unless further donor contributions are forthcoming to meet a current shortfall in cereals of 26,206 MT;

The main season rains in July have been largely normal to above normal throughout much of highland Ethiopia, however, deficits have been reported from some pocket areas and there are concerns that heavy storms in August and September may lead to localised crop damage and inundation.
