  • Following the intense seismic activity that occurred over the Awash Fentale area near the Dofan volcano, particularly on 4-6 January with an earthquake of 5.7 M, approximately 90,000 residents have been affected, 60,000 in southern Afar and 30,000 in northeastern Oromia.
  • So far, around 40,000 people have been relocated in Afar, out of whom, 25,000 in Awash Fentale district and other 15,000 in Dulecha district, settled in multiple sites. In Oromia, more than 20,000 people have been relocated to eight sites. Registration is ongoing.
  • In addition, houses, health centres, schools, a large sugar factory and roads have been significantly damaged and opening fissures in several roads. Furthermore, there are concerns about the nearby Kesam/Sabure Dam and the evolution of the cholera epidemics, currently affecting Awash river valley in Afar region.
  • A multi-sectoral and rapid response assessment (MIRA) combined with damage and scientific assessments is still ongoing.
  • The government has started food distributions while humanitarian partners are providing emergency WASH, shelter/Non Food Items, health and nutrition assistance. Additional support is expected in the coming days, including the assistance delivered through the Rapid Response Mechanism co-funded by DG ECHO.
