Ethiopia - Seismic and volcanic activity (GDACS, USGS, Ethiopian Red Cross Society) (ECHO Daily Flash of 07 January 2025)

  • Since 22 December 2024, intense seismic activity has been registered in the southern Afar and northern Oromia regions in correspondence of the Dofan volcano. More than 80 earthquakes have been reported with magnitude between 4.3 up to 5.7. The strongest one (5.7) has been recorded on 4 January at 0.52 UTC at a depth of 8 km, approximately 15 km north of the aforementioned volcano.
  • The Ethiopian Red Cross Society carried out a rapid assessment in the affected areas. It is estimated that around 81,750 individuals have been affected. There are key concerns on emergency shelter, food assistance and clean water.
