Ethiopia - Refugees displacement (DG ECHO, UNHCR) (ECHO Daily Flash of 3 July 2025)

  • A second wave of displacement has hit Matar and Muon in Gambella, as increasing numbers of South Sudanese and host communities seek refuge from the ongoing armed conflict taking place in densely populated areas at the border between South Sudan and Ethiopia. Registration has not started, but it is estimated that over 50,000 refugees have arrived. A sharp uptick in violence has also been noted in Gambella, with localised attacks reported on civilians.

  • The humanitarian situation continues to deteriorate due to the daily influx of arrivals and difficult conditions, compounded by ongoing rains. Affected populations are sharing overcrowded public spaces such as school facilities and abandoned shelters along the road. Many people are sheltering under trees. While Burbiey was previously the main crossing point, movements have shifted to unofficial routes, making tracking and assistance more difficult.

  • Despite these difficult conditions, humanitarian partners are operating: DG ECHO-supported Plan International has started delivering emergency shelter/NFIs and setting up a protection desk, while GOAL, an international humanitarian response agency is providing nutrition services and hot meals.
