Ethiopia - Mpox (DG ECHO, WHO, EPHI) (ECHO Daily Flash of 4 June 2025)

  • On 1 June, the Ethiopian Public Health Institute (EPHI) confirmed the first Mpox cases in Ethiopia — a 21-day-old infant and the mother in Moyale, Oromia, near the Kenyan border. As of 3 June, six confirmed cases have been reported across Moyale, Jimma (Oromia), and Sidama, with one death, the infant. WHO noted no epidemiological links between cases; all strains are Clade Ib.
  • Fifteen suspected cases are under investigation across Oromia, Central Ethiopia, Addis Ababa, South Ethiopia, Harar, Benishangul Gumuz, and Somali regions. Testing is available at three labs in Addis Ababa, Adama, and Hawassa, but logistical challenges persist.
  • Surveillance has increased at Bole International Airport and other entry points. Mpox monitoring is also integrated into the national polio vaccination campaign. EPHI and IOM are assessing mobility patterns to prevent spread.
  • No Mpox vaccines are currently available; WHO is exploring support from Kenya. EPHI has presented a preparedness and response plan with a funding requirement of USD 10.2 million for the next three months.
