- Since mid-February 2025, armed hostilities in South Sudan have triggered forced displacements of civilians seeking protection in Ethiopia.
- According to UNHCR, about 23,000 have crossed into Gambella region, most of them women and children, with expectations that the numbers will increase while clashes continue in South Sudan. Wounded asylum seekers have also been streaming in, with over 140 suffering from weapon-related injuries. Over 30 reportedly died while being transported across the border. The main hospital is dealing with a lack of surgical equipment and blood, addressed by the ICRC and Médecins Sans Frontières.
- UNHCR and governmental authorities have called upon partners to urgently provide a multisectoral support. The Ethiopia Rapid Response Mechanism co-funded by DG ECHO is scaling-up the response, addressing immediate basic needs of asylum seekers through the provision of WASH and Multi-Purpose Cash assistance, on top of responding to the ongoing cholera response. Indeed, this influx comes as authorities and partners are battling an outbreak in that area, with 1,320 cases and 29 deaths reported to date.
