Ethiopia: GIZ at work: Defying drought, halting hunger

Ethiopia is experiencing its worst drought in decades. The reason: the climate phenomenon El Niño. As a result, 16 million people in the country are reliant on food aid – last year it was half as many.

To ensure food security the farmers need to plant crops, for which above all they require water. On behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH is working together with the Ethiopian Government to promote sustainable land management and to improve the water supply.

In the discussion, Gabriele Heuser talks with Dr Elisabeth van den Akker, the manager of the ‘Measures to combat drought in the lowlands of Ethiopia’ project, about the GIZ projects in Ethiopia and the conditions the local people are facing.
