Ethiopia - Funding for South Sudanese refugees (DG ECHO, DG ECHO partners, UNHCR, UNICEF) (ECHO Daily Flash of 26 June 2025)

  • The influx of South Sudanese asylum seekers into Ethiopia’s Gambella region continues, reaching some 50,000 people, meaning that the recent UNCHR contingency plan figure has been reached, and perhaps exceeded. Between 500 and 1,000 people are reportedly crossing into the country daily. Official registration reportedly started this week.
  • DG ECHO has mobilised EUR 500,000 in additional funding from its Acute Large Emergency Response Tool (ALERT) to help address the most urgent shelter and non-food item needs through its partner Plan International.
  • High levels of severe acute malnutrition (8%) among children under five and a 24% malnutrition rate among pregnant and lactating women have been reported. GOAL, an international humanitarian response agency, has started distributing hot meals and will provide highly-needed health and nutrition services under an existing DG ECHO grant.
  • A draft site plan for a 1,022 hectare settlement for some 60,000 new arrivals has been finalised, with 12 hangars planned as temporary shelter. Relocation to the new site is expected soon for some 1,200 individuals.
