- The escalation of the conflict in South Sudan has triggered forced displacement into Ethiopia since early March 2025. Asylum seekers are arriving mostly through Burbiye entry point, in Gambella region, where local communities are also battling a cholera outbreak.
- Local authorities are reporting over 35,000 new arrivals between 6 March and 16 April. These have reached 1000 people a day after 10 April, as the fighting is intensifying in South Sudan.
- A recent needs assessment led by Ethiopia’s Refugees and Returnees Service and UN agencies revealed a disastrous humanitarian situation while asylum seekers -mostly women and children - face severe protection risks. In addition, they have settled in makeshift tents in an area that is expected to be soon flooded.
- DG ECHO is advocating for mobile teams to address the most urgent needs. The Ethiopia Rapid Response Mechanism, co-funded by DG ECHO, is already responding to the cholera outbreak and stands ready to include other basic needs.
