Situation Update
Various man-made and natural shocks are continuing to have an impact in Ethiopia. Based on the education cluster data from December 2022, more than 3.5 million children (50% girls) do not have access to school due the impact of conflict and climate shocks across the country.
In Tigray, the sub-regional cluster reports indicate that out of an estimated 2.3 million school-aged children, 1.7 million children were denied the right to education for 3 academic years due to the conflict and Covid-19, with damage reported to have impacted 88% of school infrastructure. There is an urgent need of rehabilitation and equipment of schools with furniture for children to have access to safe and protective learning environments.
In Afar, 400 schools, representing 33% of the total schools in the region, are either severally (60%) or partially damaged due to the conflict and other shocks. Cluster data of December 2022 indicates that 37,740 children (G- 15,850) girls remain OOSC for more than a year due to conflict of boarding zones of Tigray (Zone II and Zone IV). Over 9,000 schools need rehabilitation including latrines that are gender sensitive and inclusive of children with disabilities.
In Oromia, the ongoing conflict resulted in immense damage on the education infrastructure with 1260 schools damaged affecting over 625K (47% F) children. In addition, the region is also impacted by drought that has led to the 4045 schools in the region at risk of drought emergency.
