Ethiopia - Earthquake (GDACS, USGS, DG ECHO, UN OCHA, WFP, media) (ECHO Daily Flash of 17 February 2025)

  • An earthquake of 6 M occurred in Ethiopia on 14 February. The epicentre was located 4 km south-east of Fentale volcano and 8 km north-east of Metehara town in the East Shewa Zone, Oromia.
  • According to partners and media reports, as of 15 February, there are no casualties or damage following the event.
  • Since December 2024, this area between the Fentale and Dofan volcanos, in southern Afar and northern Oromia regions, has been experiencing intense seismic activity with earthquakes that reached 5.8 M. More than 80,000 people have evacuated the affected areas since January and several infrastructures have been severely damaged. Additional evacuations are expected after this new episode. However, displaced populations have expressed reticence to relocate to the new sites identified by the Government.
  • Clashes between Government forces and Unknown Armed Groups have been reported nearby the earthquake-affected areas in Fentale District jeopardising the delivery of assistance to the displaced population.
  • EU humanitarian funding has provided support in the affected areas since January.
