Ethiopia - Drought and Conflict (DG ECHO, DG ECHO Partners, Ethiopian Red Cross Society) (ECHO Daily Flash of 30 December 2024)

  • The combination of drought and conflict has deteriorated the humanitarian situation in Bugna and Lasta districts, North Wollo, Amhara region, affecting 77,000 people, including 10,000 displaced.
  • Access restrictions imposed by local militia prevent population’s access to services. Telecommunications and the banking system are unfunctional. No Government structure has been present for 3 months.
  • Low crop production, high food prices, and lack of humanitarian and social protection support, have increased acute food insecurity. Around 79% of pregnant and lactating women and 70% of children under are acutely malnourished, 9.2% severely. The provision of nutrition supplies has been interrupted for one year.
  • 5,747 malaria cases have been reported, with scabies also affecting the area. There is no operational ambulance. 77% of people have no access to water. Only 35% of the primary scholar-aged children are regularly attending school.
  • WFP and ERCS started in-kind food distributions. The new ECHO-funded Rapid Response Mechanism has been triggered to provide immediate nutrition, water, and sanitation support.
