Ethiopia - Conflict displaces over 11,000 people (DG ECHO, DG ECHO partners, UN OCHA) (ECHO Daily Flash of 6 June 2025)

  • Armed conflict, fuelled by political and ethnic divisions, continues to escalate in the border areas of Oromia and Benishangul Gumuz regions, and recently sent over 11,000 people into displacement.
  • An attack in Harowata kebele, Sasiga woreda in Oromia has displaced nearly 5,500 civilians, now sheltering in government buildings.
  • In the Kamashi zone of Benishangul Gumuz, two attacks by unidentified armed groups from Oromia resulted in nearly 5,900 people displaced within the same woreda as well as casualties among the population.
  • According to UN OCHA, the internally displaced persons (IDPs’) priority needs include food assistance, non-food items, and protection services. DG ECHO partners have initiated a Multi-Purpose Cash Transfers (MPCT) response.
