Ethiopia's pastoral lowlands in its southern and southeastern regions are particularly vulnerable due to consecutive and consistent climate shocks. An early warning analysis by the Ethiopia Meterological Institute and partners indicated a high likelihood of drought conditions during the October–December 2025 season, confirming that anticipatory action triggers were met and flagging priority woredas in the Somali and Oromia regions. Through the Special Fund for Emergency and Resilience Activities (SFERA), the Government of Belgium contributed USD 500 000 to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) to protect the livestock assets of 37 000 vulnerable households (185 000 people), safeguarding over 2 million animals, strengthen drought early warning systems and deliver animal health services to vulnerable communities.
