Ethiopia: Areas of Humanitarian Concern Snapshot (as of July 2014)

Areas that received poor mid-February to May belg/gu/ganna rainfall are reporting increasing water shortages and pasture for livestock. Results of bi-annual and ad-hoc nutrition surveys revealed deteriorating nutrition situations in parts of the country, especially in Oromia and Somali regions. Pastoralist and agro-pastoralist communities are particularly affected, requiring close follow-up and timely assistance. The situation is expected to further deteriorate until the next rainy season in October.

UNHCR and ARRA are actively looking for additional camp sites to accommodate the growing South Sudanese refugee influx in Gambella region. Nutrition surveys in Kule, Tierkidi and Leitchor camps in Gambella revealed GAM rates above the emergency threshold of 15 per cent. The recent refugee arrivals cite food insecurity as their main reason for flight.
