Released on 9 January, the 2020 Humanitarian Needs Overview for Ethiopia identified 10.6 million people affected by climate and man-made humanitarian crisis, of whom 8.4 million people are in need of assistance and 6.2 million people in acute need requiring immediate humanitarian assistance, including 54 per cent children and 1.8 million IDPs.
Over one third of the people in need live in areas classified with high severity of needs, meaning that their needs are more severe, time-critical and compounded. In some areas, hosting in total 382,000 IDPs and returnees, there is limited data on the severity of needs. The document was consolidated by OCHA on behalf of humanitarian partners and in consultation with the Government of Ethiopia. It represents a consolidated evidence base and helps inform joint strategic response planning.
