Overview of Region

  • In Afar, sugum rain (February-April) is critical for water replenishment and pasture regeneration, especially after long dry jilaal season (September-December). Due to the rain delays, north and north eastern part of the region is experiencing serious water shortage.

  • In Jan-Aug 2017, 6% of total children received SAM treatment in Afar.
Although lower than in 2016, admissions still remain at a relatively high level compared to normal years.

  • On average, 19% of OTP admissions were managed by the MHNTs.
