Assosa, November 2, 2011 (Assosa) - The Administration for Refugee and Returnee Affairs (ARRA) said the second refugee camp has been opened in MaoKomo Special Woreda of Benishangul Gumuz State. ARRA Deputy Director Ayalew Aweke said during a visit of over 30 officials and professionals drawn from the region and also the UNHCR to the refugee camp on Tuesday that more than 5,000 refugees live in the new camp.

The refugees, most of whom are women and children, were displaced from Blue Nile State of Sudan.

Ayalew said basic necessities such as food and medical services are being provided to the refugees in collaboration with the UNHCR and WFP.

He said the new refugee camp was opened because the number of refugees in Sherkole refugee camp, which was established 14 years ago, has grown to 9000 from the previous 4000.

Additional refugees are entering the Ethiopian territory at present, he said.

UNHCR-resident representative Moses Okello on his part said the commission will provide the necessary support to refugees in collaboration with the Ethiopian government.

Some of the refugees on the occasion lauded the support of the Ethiopian government and people.
