50,000 Ethiopians advised to evacuate after earthquakes, volcanoes

By VOA News

Ethiopian authorities have advised 50,000 people to evacuate from a northeastern region following a series of earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.

The evacuation advice was given for the Afar region, where a 5.5 magnitude earthquake late last month triggered the eruption of Mount Arteala.

A 4.2 magnitude quake earlier this week led to another volcanic eruption.

The earthquakes have damaged roads, and large areas of land used for grazing are covered with lava that has spewed from Mount Arteala.

There have been no reports of human casualties. But local officials say hundreds of goats, camels and donkeys have perished.
