Operational Updates

Children Social Food Safety Net

• Caregivers in the communities of Mbabane, Piggs Peak, and Mafutseni are currently participating in skills training as part of WFP's support for Neighbourhood Care Points (NCPs). This initiative, developed in consultation with 131 NCP caregivers, is part of WFP's Caregivers' Livelihood Support Programme. The Ministry of Agriculture was engaged to provide support to the caregivers to boost their livelihoods as an incentive for their contribution.

• In support of the Deputy Prime Minister’s Office, WFP provided social safety nets for 26,597 orphans and vulnerable children, 12,983 boys and 13,614 girls. The children were given one warm meal a day to meet their acute food needs. Through the support, WFP distributed a total of 75.801 mt of food.

Home-Grown School Feeding

• WFP selected three vendors to implement the distribution of eggs and vegetables to 50 schools that implement the Home-Grown School Feeding Programme (HGSF).

• In addition, WFP undertook three Food, Safety and Quality (FSQ) trainings reaching 48 cooks, 50 head teachers, and 50 school feeding focal teachers. Topics covered include FSQ fundamentals, storage and handling of vegetables and eggs, HGSF progress, monitoring, data collection roles and responsibilities.

Climate Proof and Resilient Livelihood Project

• WFP in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture and National Maize Corporation (NMC) trained 134 smallholder farmers (98 females, 36 males) in soil sampling analysis and post-harvest techniques. The initiative aims to equip smallholder farmers with the knowledge necessary for successful maize production.

• To make sure that farmers are linked to markets, NMC also discussed farmers contracting, including the requirements and benefits of entering contract with NMC. This knowledge enables farmers to take advantages of market opportunities with NMC.
