UMCOR Hotline 25 Apr 2003: Eritrea, Ethiopia, India, Iraq

Extracted from UMCOR Hotline 25 Apr 2003
UMCOR is present in the ongoing emergency in Iraq through several partners, including the Middle East Council of Churches, Church World Service, Norwegian Church Aid, and the Mennonite Central Committee. Through these partners, UMCOR is responding to the special needs of the children who endured great suffering over the last decade. Direct aid is also being provided - tents, blankets, medicine and relief kits. The Middle East Council of Churches has established at least eight major relief centers where people can seek refuge through local churches and mosques. These are concentrated around four cities: Baghdad, Kirkuk, Mosul, and Basra. Shelter is being provided for internally displaced people as well as people who have fled to neighboring Jordan, Syria, Turkey and Iran. Please give to UMCOR's Iraq Emergency Advance #623225-4.

Other international emergencies are less visible yet just as real. A call has gone out from Action by Churches Together (ACT), of which UMCOR is an international member, for response to the Assam Cyclone in the Dhubri District of India. Such calls come almost daily to UMCOR. Please give generously to the International Disaster Response Advance # 982450-8 so that the United Methodist response can be immediate when people suffer from natural or human made disaster.

Please remember those who endure famine in southern Africa as well as Ethiopia and Eritrea. Their suffering continues away from the media and the world's attention. Yet the impact is very personal and real. Please give to the Southern Africa Famine Advance #101250-4.

UMCOR is providing emergency relief in many areas of the world.
