Halhale, 18 October 2008 - The Minister of Agriculture, Mr. Arefaine Berhe, said that encouraging achievements are being registered in efforts to achieve food security and eradicate poverty thanks to the dedication of the people and Government of Eritrea. He made the remarks at a gathering held at the Halhale National Agricultural Research Institute in connection with World Food Day.
Mr. Arefaine indicated that vigorous endeavors are being made to replace the practice of seasonal farming with that of irrigational, boost output both in terms of quality and quantity, as well as promote afforestation and wildlife resources.
The director general of the Institute, Dr. Eyasu Gebretatios, on his part stressed the need for protecting the human rights of individuals stricken by poverty and suppression, as the haves or have nots are not the ones whose human dignity should be violated at will.
Meanwhile, the Administrator of the Southern region, Mr. Mustafa Nurhusein handed certificates and awarded prizes on the occasion of World Food Day to exemplary farmers in Dubarwa sub-zone who are actively engaged in soil and water conservation activities, as well as chicken breeding.
Present on the occasion were the Minister of Tourism, Ms. Amna Nurhussein, the Chairperson of the NUEW, Ms. Leul Gebreab, the Secretary General of the NCEW, Mr. Tekeste Baire, and other heads of different institutions, as well as invited farmers.
