Eritrea: Gash-Barka region - Efforts continue to promote provision of potable water supply

Barentu, 17 March 2009 - As part of the endeavors being made in Gash-Barka region to provide reliable potable water supply to the public, 10 projects were implemented last year and service has already began.

The head of the water resource department's branch office, Mr. Haile Asfaha, indicated that the implementation of potable water supply projects in the villages of Molqi, Omhajer, Elala, Maishegli, Birar, Gurseb, Adi-Shegal, Tebeldia, Fagimirah and Shihat have been finalized. Besides, 12 other similar projects that were launched last year are under implementation in a number of administrative areas, he added.

Stressing the significance of efficient water resource management, Mr. Haile explained that training in this domain has been offered in various sub-zones of the region. He further noted that the construction of large and small-scale micro-dams and water reservoirs are making due contribution in enriching underground water resources, in addition to easing potable water supply problems the local inhabitants used to encounter.

Moreover, Mr. Haile pointed out that priority attention would be given to the regrouped villages as regards meeting their demands of potable water supply.

About 400 potable water supply projects have been implemented over the past six years in Gash-Barka region which are playing a major role in providing clean drinking water to the public, according to reports.
