Africa Famine Relief 1 Jun 2000

Help save a starving child today!
Dear Friend and Supporter,

Please help save a child and her family from starvation today. About 16 million children, women and men are still facing starvation in the Horn of Africa. The countries most affected by this famine are Ethiopia, Eritrea, Kenya and Somalia.

During this past week, Mercy International-USA (Mercy-USA), through our offices in Somalia and Kenya, has supplied food packages for 1,500 families (about 9,000 people) living in Somalia's Mergaga Refugee Camp, 25 miles from the border with Ethiopia. Most of these families had recently crossed the border searching for food. Mercy-USA provided them with food packages good for one-month and containing: 62 pounds of sorghum, 26 lb. of beans, 26 lb. of rice, 13 lb. of sugar and 9 lb. of cooking oil.

We also sent a health team from our Tuberculosis Treatment Center in Bosasso, Somalia to examine the camp residents and dispense vitamins and essential, life-saving drugs.

Next week, Mercy-USA is distributing food packages to 1,000 starving families (about 5,000 persons) in drought-stricken northeastern Kenya. These food packages will be distributed in five villages (Khalaliyow, Feeqow, Karo, Bella and Gududiye) in the Mandera District. Each package costs about $28 and contains the following: 66 pounds of maize, 22 lb. of beans, 13 lb. of vegetable oil and 9 lb. of sugar.

In addition, Mercy-USA is exploring relief projects inside Ethiopia and Eritrea.
