Goal El Salvador update Feb 2001

Two devastating earthquakes rocked El Salvador just a month apart on January 13th and February 13th 2001 killing hundreds and leaving hundreds of thousands homeless.
In the immediate aftermath of the initial earthquake a GOAL team travelled from its base in neghbouring Honduras to the site of some of the worst devastation in the Usulutan province.

Within days, thousands of homeless families were supplied with shelter packs which contained items such as plastic sheeting, jerry cans and blankets to cater for their basic survival needs.

When the second earthquake devastated another region in El Salvador, yet more supplies were rushed in from neighbouring Honduras.

GOAL is working on a pilot house reconstruction project in the town of Santa Elena which was flattened during the January earthquake, and is also restoring hundreds of family wells that were damaged or contaminated.

GOAL has carried out very successful programmes of a similar nature for the past two years in neighbouring Honduras to the acclaim of the local community and the Honduran government. GOAL has been helping rebuild hundreds of homes there since Hurricane Mitch devastated the Central American country in 1998.

GOAL needs your help urgently.
