El Salvador: The poor help the poor

by Katia Maldonado
EL SALVADOR: El Salvador's devastating earthquake has left 1 out of every 6 people in El Salvador in damaged homes or homeless. Yet, despite their own poverty, people in Area Development Programs (ADPs) supported by World Vision have shown solidarity with those affected.

On February 2, a group from the ADP Monquecagua in Honduras, provided a donation of: 55 quintals of corn, 5 quintals of potatoes, 3 quintals of beans, 5 boxes of sardine cans, 54 lbs of coffee, 15 lbs of coffee in grain, 2 lbs of sugar, 1 lb of lard, 20 units of pumpkins, 25 units of lemons, 5 bunches of bananas, 60 lbs of yucca, 10 lbs of vegetables and 50 pieces of cloth. The gift was distributed to 200 families in a World Vision ADP in the Department of Ahuachapan.

Communities in two other World Vision ADPs in El Salvador, including two Child/Youth committees and local communal committees, worked to gather food, clothing, hygiene items and cash. This donation was distributed to 150 families in affected areas.

World Vision is providing food, shelter and medicine to 3,000 families in the Departments of Ahuachapan and Sonsonate, where four projects were badly affected by the earthquake.

Food and assistance will be provided every week for one month (February). Kitchen kits have also been distributed, along with blankets and mattresses. In addition to this, medical assistance has been provided and health centers equipped with facilities for pediatric medicine.

Personal hygiene kits will be distributed to 3,000 families this week.

As the rainy season starts in May or June, World Vision El Salvador will start a housing construction program in February.
