El Salvador - Earthquake (GDACS, USGS, media) (ECHO Daily Flash of 19 July 2023)

  • An earthquake of 6.5M at a depth of 70 km occurred offshore in the Pacific Ocean, very close to the western coast of El Salvador on 19 July at 00:22 UTC (18 July at 18:22 local time). The epicentre was located 43 km south of Intipucá (La Unión Department).

  • USGS PAGER estimated that up to 446,000 people were exposed to strong shaking and more than 1,500,000 to moderate shaking among El Salvador, Nicaragua and Honduras.

  • According to media, as of 19 July, there are no initial reports of casualties or damage and no tsunami warning was triggered.
