An earthquake of 6.5M at a depth of 70 km occurred offshore in the Pacific Ocean, very close to the western coast of El Salvador on 19 July at 00:22 UTC (18 July at 18:22 local time). The epicentre was located 43 km south of Intipucá (La Unión Department).

USGS PAGER estimated that up to 446,000 people were exposed to strong shaking and more than 1,500,000 to moderate shaking among El Salvador, Nicaragua and Honduras.
