Highlights

  • Executive Director Ertharin Cousin, and Deputy Executive Director Amir Abdulla participated in the United Nations Conference on Housing and Sustainable Urban Development (Habitat III) in Quito, Ecuador.

  • Executive Director visited a Colombian refugee family part of WFP’s assistance programme in urban areas.

  • Deputy Executive Director visited WFP’s projects and met with main partners in the Imbabura Province.

Operational Updates

  • As part of the regional initiative of lessons learned and good practices on resilience, WFP and the Regional Bureau prepared a video on the results of WFP’s climate change project -FORECCSA- in Cayambe.

  • In commemoration of World Food Day; WFP, the Ministry for Economic and Social Inclusion and the President of the National Assembly participated in a Nutritional Festival in Pimampiro, Imbabura Province. Mothers, participants from the interagency program of local food systems, were given a bag with a set of dishes for supplementary feeding for their children.

  • During the Executive Director’s visit to Ecuador, WFP hosted a meeting with partners on the importance of urban food security partnerships and the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goal 2 of ending hunger and malnutrition.

  • Executive Director, among other national and international authorities, was part of a Presidential Dinner, in the framework of Habitat III Conference.

  • Within the Habitat III Conference, Deputy Executive Director Amir Abdulla, presented WFP experiences at the Side Event Urban Safety Nets: Strengthening National Capacity for Disaster Response, where local, national and international authorities presented different perspectives on the topic.

  • The Deputy Executive Director, was also part of the panels of the following Side Events on Habitat III Conference: Good Governance for Healthy and Sustainable Urban Food Systems; Food Insecurity and Climate Change in Cities; Meeting Challenges through and Integrated Approach; Special Session on Urban-Rural Linkages; and Crisis in Cities or Cities in Crisis.

  • Coordination continues with government institutions for the delivery of cash transfers to people affected by the earthquake. To date 73,364 people have benefited from cash transfers.
