Highlights

  • The WFP Project “Enhancing Resilience to the Adverse Effects of Climate Change – FORECCSA” received an award for the achievements reached in the Nabón Canton in the Province of Azuay.

  • The number of vulnerable Venezuelans crossing the northern border of Ecuador is increasing: many of them are in need of food assistance.

Operational Updates

  • Within WFP’s positioning strategy with the new government authorities, the Country Director held meetings with the First Lady, the President of the National Assembly, the Secretary for the Programme “Toda una Vida”, the Minister of Environment, the Vice-Minister of Human Mobility and the Head of the Parliament Against Hunger. During these meetings, the Country Director discussed WFP’s joint work, reaffirmed alliances and strengthened WFP’s cooperation in accordance with the national government priorities.

  • The Adaptation Fund approved the Binational Project on Climate Change and Food Security, with a focus on gender equality. The project will be implemented between the Ministries of Environment and Sustainable Development of Colombia and the Ministry of Environment of Ecuador, and the two WFP Country Offices.

  • Ecuador’s National Assembly approved a Resolution on the compliance with the 2030 Agenda, with 126 affirmative votes and one abstention, committing to implement the 2030 Agenda and the 17 Sustainable Development Objectives (SDG).

  • WFP and the United Nations Country Team (UNCT) met the Vice-President of FIDA in order to establish further cooperation, as part of the Rome Based Agency cooperation strategy.

  • WFP, jointly with the Provincial Government of Sucumbíos, supports the complementary school lunch programme that benefits 2,800 children in the Province. At the end of the 2016-2017 school year, parents, students and teachers expressed their gratitude towards WFP and indicated that children have significantly improved their academic performance.

  • WFP carried out a workshop on the Theory of Change with technicians from the Ministry for Economic and Social Inclusion. The objective of the workshop was to facilitate and support the process of revision of the Child Development Strategy within the framework of activities related to the child care centres of the Government, and to give attention to older adults, with emphasis on nutritional sensitive issues that affect the behaviour of food consumption at home.
